Vlamingi Tang (Vlaming's Unicornfish / Bignose Unicornfish)

The Vlamingi Tang, also known as the Vlaming's Unicornfish or Bignose Unicornfish, develops a striking coloration as it matures. Adult specimens typically display a deep brown to purple body coloration. Juveniles show a lighter coloration across the dorsal area that gradually darkens toward the ventral side.

Distinct vertical markings run along the body and are complemented by vibrant blue highlights. The dorsal fin, anal fin, tail, and facial features are accented with bright blue patterns that create an intricate and visually striking appearance.

Aquarium Requirements for the Vlamingi Tang

A 360-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space for this active species. Vlamingi Tangs grow significantly over time and require an aquarium with long open swimming areas as well as rock structures that provide shelter and security.

The aquarium should include a secure elongated lid or cover, as this species may jump if startled or stressed.

While the Vlamingi Tang may show aggression toward other tang species, it is generally peaceful with most other community fish. It is also considered reef safe, as it does not harm sessile invertebrates commonly kept in reef aquariums.

Diet and Feeding

Although tangs will occasionally accept meaty foods in an aquarium setting, their diet should primarily consist of marine algae and seaweed-based foods.

Providing regular algae-based foods helps:

  • Strengthen the immune system

  • Reduce aggression toward tank mates

  • Support overall health and digestion

Dried seaweed can be attached to a rock or placed in a veggie clip inside the aquarium. Feeding seaweed at least three times per week is recommended.

Popular prepared foods include:

  • Sea Veggies

  • Seaweed Salad

  • Ocean Nutrition seaweed products

These options provide convenient and nutritious feeding solutions for herbivorous marine fish.
