General Information About Half Black Angelfish

The Half Black Angelfish (Centropyge vroliki) gets its name from its striking half-pearl and half-black coloration. It is recommended that this species be the only dwarf angelfish in a tank due to its territorial nature. This fish is not reef-safe, as it may nip at soft coral polyps, clam mantles, and zoanthids.

Suggested Diet and Nutrition

In the wild, Half Black Angelfish feed on small crustaceans and algae. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of Spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, and specialized preparations containing sponge and algae. Live rock in the aquarium is also beneficial for grazing.

Origin

This species is native to the West Pacific region, with a distribution that stretches from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Bali, the Marshall Islands, and Vanuatu. They are also found as far north as Japan and as far south as Lord Howe Island and the Tonga Reefs.

Tank Requirements

A minimum 70-gallon aquarium is recommended, with plenty of live rock and hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression.

Compatibility

Half Black Angelfish should be housed as the sole dwarf angelfish in the tank. They can show territorial behavior toward similar species.

Reef Suitability

These angelfish are not suitable for reef tanks, as they may consume coral polyps and other invertebrates.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Centropyge vroliki is considered extremely challenging. Males and females show no obvious differences in coloration, making pairing difficult.
