Colini Angel (Centropyge colini) Overview

The Colini Angel stands out with a vibrant yellow body and a contrasting blue back and dorsal fin. This rare pygmy angelfish averages about 3.5 inches and commands attention in advanced marine displays. Because it remains uncommon in the trade, experienced aquarists value it as a thoughtful, high-care addition.

Colini Angelfish Habitat and Environment

In the wild, Colini Angelfish favors deep, shadowed reef zones. To mirror that environment, create structured rockwork and calmer, dimmer areas for security and grazing.
  • Native range: Cocos-Keeling Islands, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Guam, and Fiji.
  • Depth pattern: Common from ~55–250 feet, and most frequently encountered deeper than 120 feet.
  • Typical sites: Caves, large crevices, and overhangs often surrounded by Tubastraea (sun corals) and black corals (Antipathes).
  • Co-occurring species: Multibar Angelfish (Paracentropyge multifasciata) and Regal/Elegant Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus).

Setting Up the Aquarium for the Colini Angelfish

Because this species prefers depth and cover, design your scape to offer both shade and glide paths.
  • Minimum volume: 70 gallons for stable territory and swimming room.
  • Rockwork: Use varied pieces to form arches, caves, and overhangs for natural browsing and retreat.
  • Stability: Secure stacks carefully so nothing shifts during maintenance or grazing.

Rockwork Building Tips

  • Stack broad, flat plates on stable supporting stones to form overhangs.
  • Add bracing rocks behind key pieces to lock structures in place.
  • Leave open lanes so the fish can loop around territory and avoid conflict.

Behavior and Compatibility

  • Lighting: Provide dim zones; however, the fish adapts to balanced modern reef lighting.
  • Reef caution: Monitor closely in SPS-heavy tanks and around small frags; occasional nipping can occur.
  • Tank mates: Introduce Colini Angelfish before larger, assertive swimmers. Keep it as the only dwarf angel in the display.

Diet and Feeding of the Colini Angelfish

Feed a varied, algae-forward menu and maintain grazeable surfaces to support natural behavior.
  • Core foods: Spirulina, marine algae sheets, quality angelfish preparations, mysis, and finely chopped marine meats.
  • Frequency: Offer two small feedings daily; adjust based on appetite and body condition.
