Yellow Coris Wrasse Halichoeres chrysus

The vividly colored yellow coris wrasse, sometimes referred to as the golden rainbowfish, golden wrasse, yellow coris, or canary wrasse, will add remarkable visual interest and activity to any marine aquarium. Because of its hardiness and small size, the yellow wrasse is a popular choice among enthusiasts of all skill levels. It's interesting to note that adult varieties have only one black spot on their fins, whereas juveniles and young females have several.

Yellow Coris Wrasse Origin Notes

The Yellow Wrasse's natural range is centered in the Eastern Indian Ocean, but it also extends into the Western Pacific, including the Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to Rowley Shoals and the Australian coast of New South Wales. A reef-associated species, the yellow wrasse is usually found in sand and rubble zones near the reef's edge.

Aquarium Housing Guidelines

A well-maintained saltwater aquarium with a tight-fitting lid and at least 50 gallons of capacity will be the perfect setup for the Coris wrasse. Aquascape generously with live rock to give your yellow wrasse plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, seek cover, or forage for food, best replicating a natural reef environment. Make sure to incorporate both swimming areas and a sizable open substrate area. When the Yellow Wrasse burrows into the sand for the night or when scared, it needs a sandy substrate two to three inches deep. The Coris wrasse should be housed with other peaceful wrasses, including its own species.

Yellow Coris Wrasse: Diet Tips and Feeding

Because benthic invertebrates form this fish's natural diet, large, ravenous yellow wrasse will consume fireworms and pyramidellid snails, thereby shielding corals and clams from these unwanted invertebrates. The Yellow Coris cannot distinguish between "undesirable" and "desirable" invertebrates, although this voracious appetite for invertebrates appears advantageous. The Yellow Coris will probably eat "desirable" ornamental invertebrates in the home aquarium, such as fan worms, shrimp, and other crustaceans, if the chance arises. However, sessile invertebrates, such as stony or soft corals, are usually safe from this species. Vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, along with premium marine flakes and marine pellet foods, should make up the Yellow Wrasse's diet in a home aquarium. Frequent small feedings throughout the day will benefit this fish.
