Slippery Dick Wrasse (Two Spot Wrasse) Care Guide and Aquarium Requirements

The Slippery Dick Wrasse, also known as the Two Spot Wrasse, is one of the smaller ornamental wrasses associated with Maori wrasse groups. Aquarists recognize this species for its intricate facial markings and bold coloration.

These markings resemble decorative patterns often compared to traditional facial tattoos. As a result, the fish displays a distinctive and recognizable appearance.

Appearance and Coloration of the Slippery Dick Wrasse

The Slippery Dick Wrasse displays striking facial patterns highlighted by two dark spots. These markings give the fish its well-known Two Spot Wrasse name.

Bright tomato-red coloration spreads across the body and continues toward the caudal fin. Together, the patterns create a vivid and exotic display of color.

This species also shows sexual dimorphism. Males develop a rhomboid-shaped caudal fin with a long filament extending from the upper edge.

Females differ noticeably. They display a rounded oval tail and lack the elongated filament.

Because of this coloration and shape variation, the Slippery Dick Wrasse stands out in fish-only marine aquariums and live rock systems.

Natural Habitat and Aquarium Setup

In the wild, the Slippery Dick Wrasse inhabits outer reef slopes and deeper lagoons. These environments often include rubble zones and algae-covered rock.

A 75-gallon saltwater aquarium or larger is recommended for long-term care. Additionally, the aquarium should include established live rock aquascaping.

Provide open swimming areas along with a wide sandy substrate. These conditions help recreate the fish’s natural reef habitat.

Temperament and Behavior

The Slippery Dick Wrasse shows an interesting personality once established in the aquarium.

Initially, the fish may appear timid or cautious. However, it often becomes active and confident after adjusting to its environment.

During the early introduction period, keep the aquarium calm and stable. Peaceful tank mates help reduce stress during acclimation.

After becoming established, mature specimens may show territorial behavior. Therefore, aquarists typically keep only one Slippery Dick Wrasse per aquarium.

Diet and Feeding

The Slippery Dick Wrasse feeds on a variety of small invertebrates in nature. Common prey includes pyramidellid snails, fireworms, and small crustaceans.

In the aquarium, offer a varied carnivorous diet such as:

  • Vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp

  • Vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp

  • Enriched mussel or oyster meat

  • Other finely chopped marine foods

Feed small portions several times each day. Frequent feeding supports healthy growth and activity.
