Red Sea Unicorn Tang (Naso unicornis)

The Red Sea Unicorn Tang is a large, open-water swimmer with a smoistentlyoth blue-green to olive body and clean blue edging along the fins. As it matures, the subtle horn begins to develop on the head, giving this species its well-known profile. This fish spends most of its time cruising the tank and requires plenty of open space to move naturally.

Collected from the Red Sea, this variant adapts best to stable, well-established systems with strong water movement. It settles in more comfortably when given room to swim and when fed cons. While it can be territorial toward other tangs, it generally coexists well with non-competing tankmates.

Natural Behavior & Aquarium Role

The Red Sea Unicorn Tang is constantly in motion, using open water to cruise and explore its surroundings. It plays a functional role in marine aquariums by grazing on algae and helping keep rock surfaces clean. Over time, this steady grazing contributes to a more balanced environment, especially in larger reef systems.

Feeding the Red Sea Unicorn Tang

A herbivore-based diet is essential for long-term health. Offer marine algae, seaweed sheets, and other plant-based foods regularly. In addition, occasional meaty foods can be included, but algae should remain the primary focus. Feeding multiple times per week helps maintain energy levels and reduces aggression.

Tank Setup & Compatibility

Due to its size and activity level, this species requires a large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space. Strong water flow and stable conditions help replicate its natural environment. While it may show aggression toward similar tangs, it typically remains peaceful with other species when given adequate space.
