Squareback Anthias: General Information

The Squareback Anthias, also known as Squarespot, Purple Blotch Basslet, Squareblock, Square, or Mirror Anthias, exhibits distinctive color patterns.\n\n
    • Females: They are primarily yellow with a lavender belly and feature a thin blue line from the nose to the pectoral fin.

    • Males: They have a pink body with a lavender belly and a rectangular shape on the side.

Tank Requirements for Squareback Anthias

    • Lighting: This Anthias thrives in dim, indirect lighting. Bright lighting can cause its vibrant colors to fade.

    • Tank Size:
        • Single Fish: A medium-sized tank of 100 gallons is suitable for one Squareback Anthias.

        • Group Setting: For a group, use a tank of 180 gallons or larger to provide ample swimming space.

    • Depth Preference: While they typically reside at mid-tank levels, Squareback's are found in depths of up to 600 feet in the wild.

Care and Maintenance

    • Hermaphroditic Nature: Like all Anthias, the Squareback is hermaphroditic. If the dominant male dies, the largest female in the group may transition to become the new male.

    • Feeding: Once acclimated, feed Squareback's a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, enriched frozen brine shrimp, and high-quality flake foods. Offer small quantities throughout the day. An attached refugium with copepods and amphipods will ensure a steady supply of live food.
