Shepardi Angelfish - Centropyge shepardi
The Shepardi Angelfish stands out with warm orange body tones accented by electric blue and purple edging. At first glance, some hobbyists confuse it with the Coral Beauty. However, the Shepardi reads as an orange fish with blue highlights, while the Coral Beauty reads as a blue fish with orange. As a result, the Shepardi often appears brighter through the mid-body and along the fins, especially under balanced reef lighting.
Because this species grazes constantly, provide mature live rock and ample swimming lanes. With consistent feeding and stable water, the Shepardi settles quickly and shows confident, active behavior.
Identification and Color Pattern
-
Primary color: vivid yellow-orange body with blue-purple edging on dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.
-
Back markings: thin, horizontal blue bars across the upper body that flash as the fish turns.
-
Overall impression: warmer, more orange forward than similar Centropyge species.
Aquarium Requirements
-
Tank size: 70+ gallons for territory and steady swimming space.
-
Aquascape: create caves, arches, and shaded pockets; add broad rock faces for algae film.
-
Flow and light: moderate flow with mixed lighting; provide some dimmer zones to reduce stress.
-
Stocking: introduce thoughtfully; avoid similar-looking dwarf angels in tight quarters.
Behavior and Compatibility
The Shepardi behaves boldly yet remains manageable in well-planned systems. It may posture around territory lines, so design multiple “escape routes.” Many keepers succeed in mixed reefs when they feed generously and keep grazing surfaces available. Even so, monitor early behavior around fleshy corals and clam mantles, then adjust as needed.
Diet and Feeding
Feed like an omnivorous grazer. Rotate Spirulina, marine algae sheets, and high-quality angelfish blends. Then add frozen mysis and finely chopped marine meats for protein variety. Because this fish nibbles throughout the day, offer small meals two to three times daily and maintain healthy microalgae on rock. This cadence supports color, reduces coral curiosity, and fuels steady activity.
Husbandry Tips
-
Quarantine new arrivals and observe appetite from day one.
-
Offer a feeding clip with nori to redirect picking.
-
Spread rockwork to break line-of-sight and limit chasing.
-
If nipping persists, increase algae options and adjust stocking order.
