The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon), also known as the Yellowface or Yellowmask Angelfish, undergoes a dramatic transformation as it matures. Juveniles display bold vertical arcs of black, sapphire blue, and white. As they transition toward adulthood, they develop an intricate body pattern of pale yellow scales bordered in blue, bright yellow pectoral fins, a distinctive dark eyespot on the rear dorsal fin, and a vibrant mottled-blue face accented with a luminous yellow mask stretching between the eyes.

Blueface Angelfish Overview

The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon), also commonly called the Yellowface or Yellowmask Angelfish, is one of the most stunning and recognizable showpiece fish in the saltwater hobby. Celebrated for its intricate facial mask, vibrant scale pattern, and dynamic personality, this species thrives in large marine systems that provide ample swimming room, clean water parameters, and plenty of established live rock.   To keep a Blueface Angelfish healthy and active, provide an established aquarium of at least 220 gallons with plenty of open swimming area and complex live rock structures for hiding and grazing. This species is best kept as the only angelfish in the system, as it tends to become territorial once settled. It is not considered reef safe, as it will readily nip at stony corals, soft coral polyps, and clam mantles. Feed two to three times daily with a varied rotation of spirulina, marine algae, premium sponge-enriched angelfish foods, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped meaty seafood.

Appearance of the Blueface Angelfish

  • Juvenile Coloration: Features a midnight-blue base framed by alternating vertical arcs of brilliant sapphire-blue and bright white. Juveniles generally measure between 1" and 4.5".
  • Adult Coloration: Undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis into an intricate pattern consisting of pale yellow scales bordered in deep blue, a bright canary-yellow chest and pectoral fin, a distinct black eyespot (ocellus) on the rear dorsal fin, and a vivid blue reticulated face mask set off by a luminous yellow band stretching across the eyes.

Blueface Angelfish Habitat Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 220 gallons or larger to easily accommodate its eventual adult length and active swimming behavior.
  • Rockwork & Layout: Build extensive live rock arrangements featuring large swim-throughs, overhangs, and secure caves where it can retreat, as well as ample surface area for natural foraging.
  • Compatibility: Best kept as the sole angelfish in the system. As it grows, it will establish dominance and defend its territory against conspecifics and similarly shaped fish.
  • Reef Compatibility: Not recommended for reef aquariums. Adults and sub-adults will readily pick at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles.

Diet & Nutrition

  • Natural Diet: Wild specimens graze primarily on encrusting marine sponges, tunicates, macroalgae, and tiny benthic invertebrates.
  • Captive Feeding: Provide a balanced rotation of frozen, freeze-dried, and enriched foods. Offer sponge-infused angelfish preparations, spirulina, dried seaweed (nori), mysis shrimp, chopped raw table shrimp, squid, and scallop.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times daily to maintain optimal condition and stable energy levels.

Unique Behavior

Like many large Pomacanthus species, the Blueface Angelfish produces audible grunting or drumming sounds when startled or defending its territory from rival tankmates. This vocal defense is surprisingly resonant and can often be heard outside the aquarium glass.

Origin

The Blueface Angelfish is widely distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific, commonly found along sheltered reef slopes, drop-offs, and lagoon channels from the Maldives and Malaysia through Indonesia, the Philippines, northern Australia, and Micronesia.
