Bluehead Wrasse (Thalassoma amblycephalum)

The Bluehead Wrasse is a spectacular, multicolored species that hobbyists easily recognize by its distinctive profile. Unlike most other reef fish, this species features an attractively rounded, blunt head that perfectly complements its sleek, rod-shaped physique. Furthermore, the Bluehead Wrasse showcases incredible color variations that shift significantly as the fish matures and changes gender, making it a dynamic addition to any saltwater system.

The Rainbow Transformation of the Bluehead Wrasse

Often called the Rainbow Wrasse, this species undergoes a breathtaking transformation from a subtle juvenile into a vivid, multi-colored adult. Initially, both males and females look quite similar, featuring a dark brown or black stripe with uneven edges along the length of the body. However, as they mature, terminal male Bluehead Wrasse specimens "flower" into their final form. The front of the fish turns a deep blue-green, which then transitions into a bright yellow band followed by a stunning red body to complete the rainbow effect.

Proper Aquarium Care for Your Bluehead Wrasse

To keep a Bluehead Wrasse (Thalassoma amblycephalum) healthy, you should provide an aquarium of 75 gallons or larger. Because these fish are exceptionally fast swimmers, they require vast open spaces alongside plenty of live rock for evening concealment. Additionally, you must provide a sandy substrate, as they often dig into the floor to sleep or seek protection. While you can keep groups of juveniles together in large systems, a mature Bluehead Wrasse tends to become more territorial. Consequently, we recommend keeping a single adult in a Fish-Only with Live Rock (FOWLR) setup alongside other spirited companions.

Dietary Needs for Peak Health

The Bluehead Wrasse is a natural carnivore that primarily hunts zooplankton and crustacean larvae in the wild. To replicate this in your home aquarium, you should offer a varied diet to maintain their high energy levels. Therefore, we suggest a regimen of:

  • Vitamin-rich frozen mysis and brine shrimp.

  • High-quality meaty preparations and fresh seafood bits.

  • Premium marine flakes and nutrient-dense pellets.
