The Striped Shrimpfish occurs within the reefs of the Indo-Pacific in large clusters of whip corals seagrasses Acroporas as well as within the long spine of urchins. They possess a long body, which is dark in color when young. As they grow older the body's color changes to a silver color and they begin to develop a dark line that runs across the entire distance of their body. These are very fascinating fish who are able to swim in a vertical position. Shrimpfish are a nuisance. Shrimpfish will be difficult for you to maintain in aquariums as long as they are kept in a mature tank with lots of live macro and microscopic algae, and only in a similar environment including seahorses and pipefish. They are not harmful to the coral reef aquarium. It needs lots of hiding spots like caves or overhangs. This Striped Shrimpfish reacts poorly when confronted by aggressive fish like gobies, wrasses, and blennies or triggerfish. It also has a tendency to attack porcupinefish. When the fish are introduced into the aquarium fresh saltwater feeder shrimp must be employed to get the fish to consume. The diet should comprise of small invertebrates that live, such as brine shrimp that are vitamin-enriched baby guppies, grass shrimp, mosquito larvae, and daphnia. It should be fed at a minimum three times per day. Looking for the perfect food source to feed your Pipefish? We suggest the AlgaGen Tisbe biminiensis.
