When should you change Activated Carbon?
Since activated carbon binds to the compounds it removes it will eventually become saturated and cannot remove any additional contaminants. Thus, it should be replaced frequently. A minimum of once per month is generally sufficient. The longer interval between replacements is not harmful to the tank, however, the carbon will diminish its capacity to eliminate contaminants in the water. If you notice a yellowing in the water, or you smell an unpleasant odor from your tank, it's time to replace the activated carbon.
